![]() ![]() I'm saying if you have no AV how will you ever know if you have been infected? If the malware itself is new eventually the AV will receive an update and then on it's next scan will alert you to the problem. Without AV, how would know know you have been infected? The exploit that is uses to infect your system could be 0-day and thus not patched by your OS, but the payload malware itself that is transmitted via the exploit could be already known by an AV. Just that common sense does not render AV useless or completely replace AV. I didn't mean to sound like I was downplaying the importance of common sense however. You can't tell me that people with "common sense" ONLY go to URLs of which they recognize the domain. Without AV you probably won't know that you have become infected, with AV it will notify you of the infection. Many people with "common sense" use these programs, and it's not impossible for someone to find and leverage an exploit in them that could be used to infect your system. Or what if someone finds an exploit in steam or teamspeak or skype. No matter how much "common sense" you have, all it takes is a little social engineering and someone could post what looks like a harmless URL to a blog or to an image looking like they are trying to help, and simply by viewing the web page you could become infected. To clarify: I am talking about a new unpatched exploit that may be used to compromise your system and transmit malware. How will you ever know that you have become infected without an AV. How is common sense going to protect you for example from a 0-day exploit that can penetrate your system without you doing much of anything at all? It's faster than trying to clean up the infected drive, even if you can/know how to do it. This is not just me being dramatic, I work in security and in 99% of cases where an employee machine is infected, we just rebuild the machine. (back up your files to an external storage solution, and also to something like google drive or a cloud based backup service). If you get a malware infection from a contemporary variant, most AV won't be able to fix it anyway, and you'll need to re-install the operating system and restore files from backup. ![]() ![]() I use microsoft security essentials, because all AV is terrible, so you might as well not pay for it and get something of equal quality to the paid stuff. That's pretty much everything besides drivers/control software like the control panel for gpu/sound/other devices. I have a browser (admittedly RAM hungy), I have games, I have office, I have an FTP client, I have virtualbox. More software installed and doing things = more resources in use.
